A progenitor of the brick-breaker genre developed by Taito. Players control a spaceship named "Vaus" to deflect energy balls and destroy all the colored bricks.
Game Details:
Arkanoid was released to the arcade market by Taito in 1986. The story is set after the destruction of the mothership "Arkanoid," leaving the sole surviving spacecraft, "Vaus," trapped in a space warp where it must break through layers of defensive walls. Compared to earlier games in the genre, this title introduced various power-ups with unique functions and stage bosses (such as the giant head, DOH, in the final level). Combined with its unique rotary "Paddle" controller, it caused a massive sensation at the time and became the defining title of the block-breaker genre.
Game Guide:
Players control the Vaus using a rotary dial to bounce the energy ball.
The core gameplay revolves around catching various functional power-ups dropped by destroyed bricks:
- Blue (E): Expands the paddle, offering the highest margin for error.
- Green (C): Catch ability, allowing the ball to be held and then re-launched.
- Red (L): Equips the paddle with lasers to destroy bricks directly, making it the most efficient weapon for clearing stages.
- Cyan (D): Splits the ball into three, creating multi-ball chaos.
- Grey (S): Reduces ball speed.
Pro Tips:
Try to prioritize obtaining the "L" or "C" power-ups. When facing Gold (indestructible) bricks, the key to a quick breakthrough is using angles to make the ball bounce repeatedly between the walls and the Gold bricks. Watch out for enemy interceptor ships; although they are not lethal, they can deflect the energy ball and cause you to miss. In the final boss battle, time your strikes carefully to hit DOH’s central weak point repeatedly with the ball.
